International applicants are considered under the same academic requirements as domestic candidates. Standard PhD applicants normally need a recognised master\'s degree with a defended thesis and approximately A- standing. Direct-entry applicants require exceptional bachelor\'s-level preparation. A background compatible with kinesiology and the faculty\'s interdisciplinary research is preferred, and admission requires an available supervisor.
The University of Toronto PhD in Kinesiology supports interdisciplinary research in kinesiology and physical education. The programme provides a base funding package equivalent to CAD 40,000 per year for four years, or five years for direct-entry doctoral students.
Benefits
Base package equivalent to CAD 40,000 including tuition and incidental fees annually for years 1–4 of the regular full-time PhD and years 1–5 of the direct-entry PhD. Sources can include university fellowships, teaching and research assistantships, departmental awards and external scholarships.
Requirements
Regular PhD: recognised master\'s degree, defended thesis and academic standing around A-. Direct-entry requirements are higher and assessed separately. Application materials include transcripts, CV, statement of interest, two writing samples, references and English-language evidence where applicable. Applicants should identify and contact a potential supervisor early.
How to apply
From 1 October 2026, select Kinesiology and PHD-Kinesiology in the University of Toronto graduate portal. Submit the complete package and CAD 135 fee by 11 January 2027.
