Ugandan citizens and eligible refugees permanently resident in Uganda may apply. Applicants must be available to begin study in September 2027, meet the academic requirements and be unable to afford UK doctoral study without the scholarship.
Commonwealth PhD Scholarships fund development-focused doctoral research at approved UK universities. Uganda is listed among the eligible countries for the 2027–2028 application cycle.
Benefits
Covers approved tuition fees, return airfare and a monthly stipend currently stated as £1,712, or £2,000 at universities in metropolitan London. It also provides eligible study travel, fieldwork, mid-term home travel and family allowances.
Requirements
By September 2027, applicants must normally hold at least an upper second-class first degree, or a lower second-class degree plus a relevant postgraduate qualification. The application requires supporting documents and a supporting statement from a named supervisor at at least one proposed UK university.
How to apply
Submit the scholarship application through CSC Central and apply through an eligible nominating body. Contact prospective UK supervisors and apply for admission to preferred universities in advance.
