The call is globally open to nonprofit organizations, for-profit companies, international organizations, government agencies and academic institutions, so an eligible Uganda-based organization may apply. However, the applicant must already have a women\'s-health or consumer-health intervention cohort in at least one of Nigeria, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Senegal, Niger, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia or Côte d\'Ivoire, together with an existing consumer-engagement approach and an established engaged user base or distribution relationship. Uganda-only interventions without a qualifying cohort in one of those target countries do not meet the call\'s geography requirement. Individuals and entities classified as individuals for U.S. tax purposes are not eligible.
This Grand Challenge funds real-world testing of AI-enabled consumer engagement approaches that can improve contraceptive uptake, continuation and informed method choice. It focuses on established women\'s-health or consumer-health platforms that can deploy, measure and evaluate AI engagement at scale in sub-Saharan Africa.
Benefits
The funder will consider awards of up to US$500,000 per project for a grant term of up to 12 months. Eligible indirect costs may be included up to 15% of the total budget subject to the Gates Foundation indirect-cost policy. The grant supports deployment, evaluation and field-building learning rather than user acquisition or negotiation of new platform access.
Requirements
Proposals must describe an existing consumer-health intervention and distribution base, the AI-enabled engagement model, target population and geography, a credible evaluation design, and measures of interaction quality, safety, confidentiality and downstream family-planning outcomes. Applicants must explain the theory of change, operating scale, user acquisition and retention metrics, locally vetted content aligned with national ministry-of-health or WHO guidance, and the field-building outputs they will produce. The proposal and budget must follow the official application instructions and Rules and Guidelines.
How to apply
Review the RFP, Rules and Guidelines, Application Instructions, FAQ and budget template on the official challenge page, confirm that the organization already operates a qualifying cohort in one of the listed target countries, and submit the proposal through the Gates Foundation portal linked as \'Apply For This Opportunity\' before the deadline.
