Scholars working or studying abroad are expressly welcome, making qualified Ugandan applicants eligible. Candidates should have completed or be near completion of an advanced degree such as a PhD, JSD or DPhil and pursue work engaging with the intellectual or social history of Islam, Islamic legal and political theory or law in contemporary Muslim societies.
The Kamel Center fellowships bring junior scholars to Yale Law School to advance research relating to Islamic law and civilization. Fellows participate in the intellectual activities of the Center, Yale Law School and the wider university.
Benefits
The one-year fellowship provides a stipend of USD 54,000 to USD 70,000 depending on education and experience. Some relocation support is available for fellows moving to New Haven from abroad. Offers to non-U.S. citizens are contingent on the ability to obtain the necessary U.S. immigration status.
Requirements
Applicants must submit a statement of interest of no more than 1,000 words describing relevant experience, interest in the Kamel Center and proposed research, a current CV, relevant law or graduate-school transcripts and two recommendation letters sent directly by referees. Non-native English speakers must provide evidence such as a recent TOEFL score above 100 or an advanced degree from an English-speaking university.
How to apply
Prepare the required statement, CV, transcripts and English evidence and arrange for two referees to send recommendations directly to the Kamel Center. Submit the applicant materials according to Yale\'s instructions between 2026-11-01 and 2026-11-30.
