Applicants from eligible countries, including Uganda, may apply. Candidates must have a suitable university degree, normally obtained no more than six years before the application deadline, and if the doctorate has already begun it should generally have started no more than three years before the deadline. Applicants normally cannot have resided in Germany for more than 15 months at the deadline.
The DAAD Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees programme supports doctoral candidates whose dissertation is supervised jointly by an academic at their home university and an academic at a German institution. It enables substantial research periods in Germany while maintaining the candidate\'s doctoral connection to the home institution.
Benefits
DAAD provides a monthly scholarship payment, travel allowance, insurance and applicable additional benefits during the funded stay in Germany. Depending on the doctoral arrangement, the programme may also support travel by supervising academics and other costs connected with the bi-national doctoral structure.
Requirements
Applicants need a detailed doctoral research proposal and schedule, evidence of academic qualifications, CV, confirmation of doctoral supervision at the home university, written confirmation from the German academic supervisor and documentation of the agreed bi-national or cotutelle arrangement. Appropriate German or English language competence must also be demonstrated.
How to apply
Establish supervision arrangements with both the home institution and a German university, prepare the research plan and obtain the required academic confirmations. Register in the DAAD portal, complete the online scholarship application, upload all academic and doctoral documentation and submit by 2026-11-16.
