Who can apply

Ugandan law graduates are eligible because the programme is specifically intended for applicants who completed their legal education outside Germany. Applicants normally need a law degree or equivalent qualification obtained outside Germany with a standard duration of at least eight semesters or 240 ECTS and an overall grade equivalent to at least 2.5 under the German grading conversion. Applicants are also assessed through an aptitude procedure based on a proposed study and research project. For the English-language pathway, applicants who did not obtain their university entrance qualification at an English-language institution must demonstrate English at C1 level. Applicants whose prior education was not at a German-language institution must also demonstrate basic German through at least 120 teaching hours or A1 CEFR, with the university permitting this German evidence to be completed within the specified enrolment conditions.

About this opportunity

The German and Comparative Law LL.M. is a one-year research-oriented programme designed for international lawyers who want advanced knowledge of German and European law and comparative legal methodology. Students develop an individual research profile, undertake comparative-law coursework and complete an independent master\'s thesis.

Benefits
The programme charges no tuition fees and students can attend free German-language courses alongside their studies. It offers a one-year, 60-ECTS LL.M., close academic supervision, comparative-law research training, access to courses in German and European law and preparation for doctoral study or international legal and policy careers. Students remain responsible for the mandatory university semester contribution and for accommodation, living costs, travel, insurance and visa expenses.

Requirements
Applicants must provide a law degree or equivalent foreign qualification meeting the academic and grade requirements. If the final degree certificate is not yet available, the university may accept a current certified academic record showing at least 210 ECTS and the provisional overall grade. Applicants must submit a project outline of no more than 5,000 characters including spaces describing the planned structure of their master\'s study, intended thematic focus of the master\'s thesis, feasibility at the University of Regensburg and connection to their previous and planned academic or professional development. Required materials also include relevant academic certificates and transcripts, secondary-school qualification, language evidence, passport copy, certified translations where required and other relevant certificates. Applicants from China, India and Vietnam require an APS certificate.

How to apply
Follow the Faculty of Law\'s official application instructions and prepare the required documents in German or English. The faculty\'s current procedure requires the application documents to be combined into one PDF and submitted to the programme coordinator by email. The university has not yet published exact application dates for the next winter intake; the previously published 2026/27 deadline has passed.
