Who can apply

Ugandan applicants are eligible because the programme is intended for postgraduate applicants who obtained their law degree outside Germany. Applicants must hold a foreign law degree corresponding to the qualification required for postgraduate legal study at Kiel University, or an academic degree from a foreign university with a focus on international or European law corresponding to a German university-level academic qualification. Applicants taking the programme entirely in English must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency. German is not mandatory for the fully English LL.M.Int. pathway.

About this opportunity

Kiel University\'s Faculty of Law offers an LL.M. pathway in International Law and/or Comparative Law that can be completed entirely in English. The two-semester programme allows international law graduates to study international, European and comparative law while completing a master\'s thesis under academic supervision.

Benefits
Kiel University currently charges no tuition fees for the LL.M. programme. Students pay a semester contribution of approximately EUR 300 per semester, which includes a public-transport ticket for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, and an additional enrolment fee applies in the first semester. Students receive individual academic mentoring and access to Kiel\'s Faculty of Law and the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law. Living expenses, travel, accommodation, insurance and visa expenses are not funded.

Requirements
Applicants must submit a motivation letter of no more than one page clearly stating if they intend to complete the LL.M.Int. entirely in English, the final foreign law degree certificate, transcripts or evidence of further academic achievements, evidence of relevant professional or extracurricular experience if applicable, a tabular curriculum vitae, one recommendation letter from a law professor or lecturer, a passport copy and proof of English proficiency. Accepted English evidence includes TOEFL ITP with at least 550, TOEFL iBT with at least 80, IELTS Academic with at least 6.5, Pearson PTE Academic with at least 59, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English grades A or B or Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English grade A. Certain education completed primarily in English may also satisfy the language requirement. Documents not issued in German or English require certified translation. Applicants from China, India and Vietnam require an APS certificate. The final law degree certificate must be available by the application deadline; a provisional certificate is not accepted.

How to apply
Submit the application exclusively through the uni-assist portal from 1 December 2026. Select Kiel University\'s Master of Laws programme, indicate the English LL.M.Int. pathway where applicable and upload all required academic, identification, recommendation, motivation and language documents. The main application must reach uni-assist by 15 February 2027. Uni-assist performs the initial formal assessment before Kiel University\'s Faculty of Law conducts the academic selection.
