Ugandan researchers are eligible because the programme accepts researchers of any nationality who are based at an African institution. Applicants must hold a doctorate, have at least eight years of postdoctoral experience, satisfy the programme\'s international academic-experience requirement and propose a humanities or social-sciences project addressing sustainable governance.
FRIAS invites established researchers based at African institutions to spend six months conducting independent humanities or social-sciences research on sustainable governance. Fellows join the interdisciplinary community and research infrastructure of the University of Freiburg.
Benefits
Selected fellows receive a tailored fellowship contract or other compensation according to their circumstances, a research-cost contribution, mobility support and reimbursement of inbound and outbound travel. FRIAS also provides office space, university research services and personalised assistance with accommodation, childcare and visa applications.
Requirements
Applicants must prepare the required research proposal, curriculum vitae, publication record, doctoral documentation and other materials specified in the application manual. A cooperation letter from an appropriate University of Freiburg academic partner is required.
How to apply
Identify an appropriate University of Freiburg collaborator, obtain the required cooperation letter and prepare all research and academic documentation. Submit the complete application through the official FRIAS system by 13:00 Central European Time on 2026-09-18.
