Full opportunity detailsUgandan citizens are eligible if enrolled in a bachelor\'s degree at a university or college in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Ireland. International students must have studied at an institution in one of these countries for more than 12 months by the application deadline. Eligible fields include biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth sciences, engineering and closely related disciplines. Applicants must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study by the internship and must remain undergraduate students after the internship.
RISE Germany enables undergraduate science and engineering students to undertake summer research internships at universities and research institutions in Germany. Interns work on research projects under the supervision of doctoral researchers and gain international laboratory and academic research experience.
Benefits
DAAD provides eligible students attending universities in the United States, United Kingdom and Ireland with EUR 992 per full month, health insurance, accident insurance, personal liability insurance, an international travel subsidy and EUR 160 toward travel to the RISE meeting in Heidelberg. Selected students attending Canadian universities may receive CAD 7,000 from Mitacs toward travel and living expenses, with insurance provided by DAAD. Internships last at least 10 weeks and no more than 90 days, with start dates between May 15 and July 15, 2027. Participants are invited to the July 2027 RISE meeting in Heidelberg.
Requirements
Applicants must submit a separate motivation letter for every research project selected, a curriculum vitae, a list of university courses completed or expected by the internship, an academic transcript and an official certificate of enrollment showing the expected graduation date. An academic referee holding at least a PhD must submit a signed recommendation letter on university letterhead directly through the application system. The recommendation deadline is December 15, 2026.
How to apply
Register for a DAAD ID and access the RISE Germany internship database when applications open. Search available research projects, select suitable placements and prepare a project-specific motivation letter for each. Upload the academic documents, complete the online application and submit by November 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central European Time. Provide the referee\'s contact information so the recommendation can be submitted separately by December 15, 2026.
Explore opportunities from Uganda and abroad. Location describes where an opportunity is based; check the official eligibility rules to confirm whether Ugandan, African or other international applicants can apply.
Compare undergraduate, master's and PhD awards by eligible nationality, subject and funding coverage. A tuition waiver does not necessarily cover living costs, insurance or travel. For medical study, confirm the exact degree and whether clinical training is included. High school awards have different age and admission requirements from university scholarships.
For US universities offering full scholarships, check the university's international admissions and financial aid pages. Confirm whether admission and funding require separate applications, and whether support is renewable each year.
For internships in Europe or elsewhere, check nationality and enrolment requirements, the stipend, accommodation and travel coverage. Paid does not necessarily mean fully funded. Remote internships may still restrict the countries where participants can work. To intern abroad without programme fees, compare direct employer applications and check which costs you must pay yourself.
For summer placements, verify the start date and application year in the official call. Search the listings for a provider or subject, such as Expedia, EU delegation traineeships or agriculture in Germany, and confirm availability with that organisation.
Check the posting date, closing date, duty station and required experience. For jobs with no experience, look for an explicit entry-level or graduate requirement; an urgent vacancy may still require experience. Verify American Embassy vacancies through the embassy's official recruitment service and New Vision vacancies against the original employer notice.
Use the intake and deadline in each listing when comparing 2026 and 2027 opportunities. A 2022 notice is historical unless the provider has published a new call. Before applying to Yale Young African Scholars or an opportunity described as a UNICEF scholarship, verify the programme name, funding and current eligibility directly with the organisation. A search phrase alone does not confirm an available award.
