Applications are welcomed from junior and senior scholars internationally, including qualified Ugandan researchers. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent scholarly credential such as an MD or JD by 2026-10-15. The fellowship is residential for the full September 2027 to May 2028 academic year.

The Institute for Advanced Study School of Social Science invites approximately 20 scholars each year for intensive residential research. The 2027-28 theme is Understanding AI, while approximately half of selected members may pursue projects outside the annual theme.

Benefits
Institute stipends are designed to supplement salary or outside funding and can reach up to USD 80,000, while generally not exceeding half of the fellow\'s previous base salary. Members receive an office, library access, subsidised dining and access to Institute housing. Eligible members may also receive a modest research fund, limited relocation support and health-insurance or childcare subsidies under Institute rules.

Requirements
Applicants submit the online application, a research proposal of no more than four pages, curriculum vitae and a writing sample of up to 50 pages. Reference letters are neither required nor accepted.
