Ugandan researchers are eligible because nominations may be submitted by institutions worldwide. The PhD must be awarded between 2025-01-01 and 2027-08-31, candidates cannot have more than two years of previous postdoctoral experience at the fellowship start and current or former faculty-level appointees are ineligible. International nominees must qualify for J-1 Scholar status and satisfy Berkeley\'s English-proficiency requirement.

Miller Research Fellowships support exceptional early-career scientists pursuing independent basic-science research at UC Berkeley. Approximately ten to twelve fellows are selected annually for three years of research without teaching obligations.

Benefits
The fellowship provides an initial annual stipend of USD 95,000 with 3 percent annual increases, USD 10,000 per year in research funding, travel to Berkeley for the fellow and immediate family, a USD 3,000 relocation allowance, medical, dental and vision insurance and additional leave and insurance benefits. The Institute estimates the total value of the 2027-2030 package at approximately USD 378,000.

Requirements
Direct applications and self-nominations are not accepted. An eligible department chair, professor, faculty adviser or research scientist must first nominate the candidate online. Accepted nominees are invited to submit the fellowship application and required research, academic and reference materials.
